You got it right! Follow the Sun (FTS) model is the same old workflow model in which work is passed on to the offices located in different time zones and work is done round-the-clock thereby reducing the project or support duration and increasing the responsiveness.
But most out-sourcing (off-shore development) arrangements will result in your employees working late nights to coordinate tasks with your offshore team under conventional FTS Model. This generally results in frustration of your employees and poor performance of your offshore team, as they don’t get the daily necessary direction.
We work on FTS model but with a twist. While our Strategic Consulting Unit in USA works in regular daytime, we split the working hours of our offshore team in two parts. In order to explain the advantage of this approach let us take an example. Let’s assume you are in USA in Pacific Time Zone (PST) and our offshore team is in India in Indian Time Zone (IST).
Our offshore team works from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm IST for 7 hours & again from 9:30 pm - 11:30 pm IST for 2 hours daily. That means your team will get two hours from 9:00 am – 11:00 am PST where the two teams are together daily. This kind of arrangement results in better communication and increased productivity for onshore as well as offshore team.
The offshore team members may actually like this arrangement too as this allow them to leave early (and beat the traffic) and spend quality time with family in the evenings. You can also give similar advantage to your onshore employees where they work from home between 9-11am and allow them to beat morning traffic rush. A WIN-WIN situation for all!
